HCCI and the National Kidney Foundation Partner to Create Chronic Kidney Disease Dashboard

Kelsey Burke, Tanya Natwick
October 22, 2024

HCCI collaborated with the National Kidney Foundation and The DataFace to develop a national and state-level multi-payer dashboard that examines the current state of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the US and highlights the gaps in CKD-related care. Our interactive tool allows users to examine the rates of CKD testing and diagnosis among people at-risk for CKD. It also highlights CKD quality of care illustrating gaps in the use of guideline directed medical therapies in its management among the ESI, Medicaid, Traditional Medicare, and Medicare Advantage populations.

The dashboard allows users to examine rates of CKD over time, by payer population, geographical area, and demographic factors. Because people with diabetes and hypertension are at a higher risk of developing CKD, the dashboard also includes insights like testing and diagnosis of CKD among people with diabetes over time.

Some key findings from the dashboard include:

  • The expected prevalence of chronic kidney disease is higher than what administrative claims data captures across all payer populations nationally and among those diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension.
  • Urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) testing is significantly underutilized in all payer populations limiting the accurate diagnosis and staging for CKD.
  • Utilization of diagnostic tests and medications vary across payer populations and among geographic areas.
  • The prescription of statins and SGLT2 inhibitors has increased slightly from 2016 to 2022 across payer populations.
  • The rate of hospitalizations among people with CKD has decreased from 2016 to 2022 across payer populations.

Findings from the dashboard will allow clinicians, policymakers, and researchers to examine current practices and policies around CKD identification and management.
